Natalie wrote to me: “I don’t feel comfortable leaving my baby to cry during sleep training. Because I read recently that it can increase his cortisol levels and change his brain chemistry, and that really concerns me.”

I hear this all the time from parents, and I completely understand. The last thing we parents want to do is to harm our baby.

Find a method that feels completely comfortable for you. If you’re feeling uncomfortable about getting your little guy to sleep better and the method, then you don’t have to do it.

There are a million ways that you can teach your baby to sleep better. If you’re feeling that one method is not the right way, it doesn’t resonate with you and your baby is really resisting it – you don’t have to do it! There are plenty of other methods that we can come up with to get your little guy sleeping well at night. That should take some of the stress away.

The studies on cortisol levels normally refer to Extinction/Controlled Crying – not gentler methods. Unless you’re doing one of these methods, then that’s not your situation.

You shouldn’t let it stress you out. Because you’re doing a different method.

Natalie is in my 21 Days to Peace and Quiet program. In my program, I have 4 different pathways to take when you teach your little one to sleep better.

We do have some really quick and efficient plans, like the Controlled Crying. But at the other end, we have a super gentle, flexible, Minimal Tears plan. And then I’ve got some middle-of-the-road options.

The majority of these plans, you stay with your baby the whole time while you teach him to sleep better. So again, this would not be the same as what these research studies are saying about higher cortisol levels.

Your baby is crying because he’s upset – you’re changing habits. When we all cry or get really upset, our cortisol levels rise. It happens on a daily basis for most of us. It certainly happens for babies when they cry.

So what does research actually say about sleep training?
I want to talk about the very first cortisol study that came out investigating sleep training.

It was done by a researcher called Middlemiss, in Texas about 10 years a go. She did a research study to investigate babies in a hospital setting. The moms put the babies down to bed and then left the room. The nurses came in, put them down and I don’t think they tended to them in the night. It was full-on Extinction.

This researcher came to the conclusion that sleep training was terrible for babies. She tested their cortisol levels and they remained higher even when they had learned how to sleep.

The original research study has been highly criticized
This study has been deemed flawed and biased by multiple researchers who have reviewed it. They deemed that it was not a proper research study. There was no control group. She had a very small sample. She didn't present the full data. Many of the subjects dropped out of the study.

It was also done in a hospital setting, which is completely different from when we’re getting our babies to sleep better at home. All of that could have contributed to more stress for the babies, and higher cortisol levels.

More recent research shows no differences in children that have been sleep trained
There’s been large, robust studies in multiple countries done on specific sleep training methods and whether they harm babies.

They compared a control group with the kids who had done the sleep training, at the time of the sleep training and 1 year, 5 years and even 10 years later.

The researches saw no difference between this kids and the control group. This study has been deemed to be a good research study. No differences in bonding. No differences in emotional development. They are not more withdrawn, despondent or anxious.
