Hownsgill Viaduct stands near Consett in County Durham and is now part of the Waskerley Way and the C2C cycle route, but it began life as a major railway solution to a major problem.

Built in 1857-1858 and designed by engineer Thomas Bouch, the viaduct was constructed to carry the line across Hown’s Gill in one sweep - replacing the earlier rope-worked inclines that had been used to get wagons up and down the valley.

The structure is 12 arches, roughly 700 feet long and up to 150 feet high, built largely from firebrick with sandstone dressings. Even in a short pan, the scale explains the reputation - this is a bridge built to make a difficult landscape behave.
