NOTE: This moody rendition of Duke Ellington's jazz -standard Mood Indigo seems to contradict the popular opinion of the strict prohibition of the public performance of jazz and swing music in the Third Reich. A number of excellent records of typically swing dance orchestras, which were unreservedly recording discs and playing in restaurants and bars of the nazi Berlin of the 1930s, show that although the NSDAP routinists certainly were not enthusiastic about American jazz -- oficially considered as the "Negro" and "Jewish" music - this was, however, just below the their noses when the jazz life flourished, providing us today with multitude of really artistic renditions made in 1933-45 by such excellent dance -- and jazz orchestras, as Kurt Hohenberger, Erhard Bauschke, Hans Rehmstedt, Willy Berking, Helmut Zacharias or Michael Jary, to name only a few.
This recording is made by the enchanting and intimate Bar Trio, with: Kurt Basl, piano; Hans Belle, guitar and Kubi Kretschmar, harmonica. In the slideshow are presented some shots of nightlife of Berlin in the late 1930s.
