Have you ever felt like a storm hit your life, like the future is growing dark, your plans are crashing in, or you're losing hope?
Everyone will go through these moments. Even the apostle Paul had to live through this experience, but God, in His goodness, will always give you something to hold onto to make it through.
In this clip, I'm gonna tell you about the story of Paul's shipwreck, how he survived, and how God will carry you through the storms in your life.
Let’s watch.
The book of Acts, chapter 27: Paul is on the way to Rome, and he knows he's going to be judged by Caesar and most likely become a martyr. He's at the end of his ministry, and he's on this ship when they encounter an unbelievable storm.
For 14 days, they don't see the sun, they don't see the stars. For 14 days, the waves are crashing—it just seems like it is never, ever ending. Maybe you feel like you've been in a storm where you forget what hope even looks like.
That's where they were. But Paul received a promise in the middle of it. The Lord sent an angel, and the angel said:
"Stay on the ship, whatever you do, and if you do, I will save every single person on this ship."
It's interesting that the promise that came to Paul didn't look like it was being fulfilled in reality. The storm got worse and worse. These seasoned sailors—they really got scared.
Eventually, they saw a shore, but they got stuck on a coral reef. The Bible says the waves crashed so hard against the ship that the whole ship began to splinter and break apart.
But Paul told them:
"Even if you can't swim, grab hold of the planks on the ship."
Now I’m here to tell you: You might go through a storm. It might seem like it's getting worse and worse. You've been trying to stay in the presence of God. You've been trying to stay with God's people. You've been trying to stay in the church.
But it seems like, no matter what you do, it’s getting tougher and tougher—worse and worse.
I'm here to encourage you today:
God has promises for you.
God's got a plank for you to hold on to. It's called the plank of God's promises, and He's got good things in store for you.
Can I encourage you?
Know the promises of protection. Read the Psalms. Say like Abraham:
"Surely, Lord, You are for me. You are my shield. You are my exceedingly great reward."
Say like David:
"You are the refuge that I will run to. You are my strong tower in time of need."
Begin to speak to your own soul and hold on to the promise of protection.
You might look at your bank account, the government, or at November 5th. You might look all around you and say:
"We are in trouble."
But can I tell you—there's a ship that is strong.
There’s a rock that is able. There’s a plank that, if you just hold on to it—even if it looks like you’re gonna drown—trust the promises of the Lord.
Lean not on your own understanding.
Hold on to the promise of provision.
You might look at your bank account and say:
"There's no provision here."
You might look around—maybe you lose your job, maybe you get sick—and feel like:
"How am I gonna afford this?"
Can I encourage you?
Trust this: Hold on to the plank of God's promises.
Maybe you're in such a frustrating place—an agitated place—you feel like you can never smile again. Maybe a place of grief—you'll never laugh again. You just feel like:
"My life is being destroyed by the waves of this storm."
Can I tell you?
The Lord promises peace.
It's one of His promises. In fact, Isaiah says:
"He will keep you in perfect peace if your mind is fixed on Him."
Jesus says:
"My peace I give to you. In this world, you will have trials, troubles, storms, tribulation. But hold on. Take heart. Have courage, for I have overcome the world."
I’m here to tell you that God is for you.
I’m here to tell you—it might look like just a piece of wood. But if it is lifted up and holds Jesus Christ, then you can cling to the cross.
It does not matter what trial, what storm, what tribulation, what enemy comes against you—if you can just cling to the cross, it will bring you to safety.
Every single one of those prisoners got to safety.
But hold on.
