Chris was recently asked to take a look at a ZipSpin CD/DVD duplicator that's having an issue reading blank discs. Specifically, the two "copy" drives are ejecting a certain type of media and the display reads "disc not blank". The owner called technical service, who said that it's either not a blank disc or the SATA cables are loose.

The steps performed in troubleshooting and diagnosis were as follows:

1. Check all cables- All cables are firmly connected.
2. Attempt to make a copy my CD- CD copied perfectly.
3. Attempt to make a copy of owner's DVD on his blanks- DVD failed to copy and duplicator displayed the "disc not blank error".
4. Attempt to copy owner's DVD using suspect blanks- First DVD was burned "on the fly" and failed to work after burning. Second DVD was burned from an ISO file generated from original DVD and worked perfectly.
5. Attempt to copy DVD to two new DVD-R discs. They both copied and worked perfectly.
6. Diagnosis is that the blank disc is either damaged, dirty, scratched, or incompatible with the device. Will advise owner to try cleaning blanks or purchase a different brand.

After looking around the "empire of dirt" Chris came across some copies of the same source DVD that was in the Duplicator. The blanks used are the exact same ones that are failing. There must be something deeper going on here. We investigated further and you can see the video here:
