Sunbirds of Kruger National Park

Sunbirds are found through most of Africa to the Middle East, South Asia, South-east Asia and southern China, to Indonesia, New Guinea and northern Australia.

Of the 132 species of Sunbirds found in the world, seven species can be found in the Kruger National Park. They are the Amethyst, Scarlet-chested, Collared, Purple Banded, Marico, White-bellied and Variable Sunbirds. We were fortunate enough to encounter four of the seven found in the Kruger.

Like the unrelated New World hummingbirds which are not found in Africa and to which sunbirds are often compared, sunbirds have long and slender, highly curved bills, tube-shaped tongues, and feed primarily on nectar and small insects.

Sunbirds have a lifespan of up to 16 years.

They range in size from the 0.2 oz (5g) Black-bellied Sunbird to the Spectacled spider-hunter, at about 1.6 oz (45g).

Sunbirds have little or no sense of smell and depend solely on their keen sense of sight to forage for flowers.

Experts say these birds visit flowers of more than 20 different plant genera, including acacia, aloe, jacaranda, and lantana.
