Milwaukee 261 St. Paul Union Depot Train Days Moves - Steam Locomotive

On Friday, June 2nd, The Milwaukee 261 moved from her home at Minneapolis Junction to St. Paul Union Depot for the Train Days event over the weekend. We followed the 261 on this short journey across the Twin Cities, then again on Sunday for the return back to the shops at Minneapolis Junction. The 261 was not alone, Great Northern 192 and Milwaukee 32A were both in tow. GN 192, an EMD NW-5, is one of ten such locomotives built for the Great Northern between 1946 and 1947. It was purchased by the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in 1996 and restored to its original condition for use on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. The Milwaukee Road 32A, also owned by the Friends of the 261, was originally numbered 202A, when delivered in April 1956, it was part of six sets of A-B-A E9s. The numbering sequence for the third set was 202A, 202B and 202C. Later the set would become 32A, 32B and 32C.

The Milwaukee Road 261 is a class "S3" 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady, New York in July 1944 for the Milwaukee Road.

It was used for heavy mainline freight and passenger work until being retired by the railroad in 1956. Instead of being dismantled for scrap, 261 was preserved and donated to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1958. Today, the locomotive is owned, operated and maintained by the Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization Friends of the 261, which runs occasional and seasonal excursion trains using the locomotive. The steam engine, restored in 1993, has logged more than 25,000 miles (40,000 km) under its own power since that time.
