Rh Disease occurs when a man with Rh+positive blood mates with a woman having Rh-negative. If the fetus has Rh+positive and that blood gets into the blood of the mother, the mother starts to create antibodies to fight it. Come a second or subsequent pregnancy the resulting war can cause serious brain damage or death in the child. This disease has been virtually eradicated in the developed world but remains rampant in the developing world. A consortium including Sick Kids Hospital, the Stanford Medical Center and the University of Sienna, Italy are working through their organization, CURhE to eliminate this disease in the developing world over the next 10 years.
