Rent controls might sound like a good idea, but they could actually make things worse, according to a massive review of nearly 200 studies.

The findings suggest that such controls drive up prices, reduce the number of available properties, and lower the quality of housing.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is reportedly pushing hard for new powers to regulate the capital’s rental market.

A thorough review of 196 studies conducted over 60 years and spanning 100 countries casts serious doubt on the effectiveness of rent controls. While they may lower rents where they’re applied, the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) warns that these controls can actually push up costs in other areas and lead to a drop in housing quality.
