THE LEGEND OF WATERMELON (MAI AN TIEM)
The Legend of Watermelon (Mai An Tiêm) is a famous folk tale in Vietnam, associated with a legend about perseverance, determination, and gratitude. Here's the story:
A long long time ago, during the reign of the Hung Kings, there was a man named Mai An Tiêm. He was a talented person but was disliked by the Hung King for some reasons. As a result, he was exiled to a deserted island in the middle of the ocean, a place with no inhabitants. Despite being abandoned in such harsh conditions, Mai An Tiêm did not lose hope.
With his strong will, he managed to survive on the island by utilizing the natural resources available. One day, while searching for food, Mai An Tiêm found a watermelon washed up on the shore. As he sat down to rest, he cut the watermelon open and ate it. However, inside the watermelon was something unusual—a seed.
Mai An Tiêm decided to plant the seed and took great care of it. Over time, the plant grew, bore fruit, and he continued to plant seeds from the watermelons. Gradually, watermelon plants became his main source of food.
One day, a ship passed by the island. Mai An Tiêm saw the ship and decided to send a watermelon with a letter inside, asking the people aboard to deliver it to the Hung King. In the letter, he explained his situation and expressed his hope of returning to the mainland.
Moved by the letter, the Hung King was touched by Mai An Tiêm's perseverance and determination. The king decided to pardon him and not only allowed him to return to the mainland but also gave him land and wealth.
Later, people began to call the watermelon "Mai An Tiêm watermelon," as a symbol of life, persistence, and gratitude.
