Defensive Solidity

A lot of Morocco’s success during the world cup was built on a solid defensive foundation, resembling a 4-1-4-1.

The block was incredibly compact both horizontally and vertically with short distances within units and between lines.

Protecting Key Areas

With most teams in modern football utilising a positional play approach. Morocco’s defensive approach was zonally based with the intention of blocking the opposition’s access to key areas.

With a player positioned between the defensive and midfield lines they could essentially police zone 14 and restrict the opposition’s access to this area.

With a zonal approach and the extreme compactness within their block. They generally didn’t mark opposition players.

This means it’s incredibly important that the block is able to move as a complete unit both laterally and vertically as the opposition circulates the ball.

Counter-Attack

Morocco would generally have players positioned beyond the ball in order to counter-attack quickly and effectively. On winning the ball they would quickly play into these players and move forward.

During transition Morocco were able to make use of effective ball carriers to move forward. This was generally both wide players and central midfielders. This was crucial and their abilities in 1v1s generated a lot of Morocco’s attacking success.
