This is one of organisational tools, that is used to help businesses manage change. It focuses on, the factors which might influence the planned change. Every goal, or vision of a business, or an individual is influenced by two opposite forces.
Good morning!
Welcome to Business Bites, a podcast episode.
Today, I am talking about, Force Field Analysis.
This tool is useful for making decisions by analyzing the forces for, and against, the change or goal to be achieved.
Driving forces, which help achieve the desired change, or goal, while restraining forces, which hinder, goal achievement. The relative strength of the driving, or restraining forces, determines whether change occurs. These forces can be internal, or external.
Let’s, understand this business tool with an example.
Assume, a business is thinking of changing its corporate office from location, ‘A’ to location, ‘B’.
Now, follow the steps one by one.
Step 1: Brainstorm factors acting positively for the change, which are called, driving forces, and factors that working negatively against the change, which are called restraining forces.
For example, the forces for the change might include:
1. The present corporate office building is too small, to accommodate increasing business transactions, and operations.
2. The location has become congested.
3. The present corporate building structure is dilapidated.
On the other hand, the forces against the change, might include,
1. Though the current location is congested, this location has historic importance.
2. Relocation will be too expensive, and risky, due to the uncertain future.
3. No ample space is available within the city limits.
Step 2: Once the forces for, and against, are identified, next, assign values to each force, according to the degree of influence each force has on the plan. You may use the scale, say one to five.
Step 3: Now add up the scores for each side, for, and against. The greatest total figure indicates the action to be taken.
Step 4: If, the forces are in favour of the change of the location of the corporate office, now think, how to make the change more successful. The decision makers have pay due attention to both internal and external factors.
Thus, force field analysis gives a clear answer to a difficult decision. When an appropriate graphic is used, it becomes, visually attractive. However, it is mainly based on qualitative data, and there is an element of high subjectivity, while assigning values for each force.
Students, a departmental store in your residential area, is planning to accept orders online, and arrange for home delivery of groceries, daily needs, and vegetables. Identify five forces for the change, and five forces against the change. Assign values on a scale 1 to 10, for each force you have identified. Discuss your force field analysis diagram with your teacher.
Thank you, happy learning.
