What inspired you to specialise in this particular field?

Plastic surgery is a vast and diverse specialty; it encompasses everything from hand surgery to reconstructive procedures following cancer treatments, and a lot of trauma-related work. During my training, I observed that many times, plastic surgeons were more like supporting members of a larger surgical team. For example, patients undergoing orthopedic or cancer-related surgeries would rarely even know who the plastic surgeon was, as we would often step in briefly during the procedure and then step out. This lack of direct patient connection left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled.

What truly drew me towards aesthetic or cosmetic surgery is the fact that, in this sub-speciality, the patient comes directly to the surgeon. We build a relationship, understand their concerns, and see them through their transformation. That personal connection was something I deeply valued.

Another significant reason for my choice is rooted in my own experiences. As a teenager, I struggled with a condition known as gynecomastia, the development of male breast tissue. Back in the 90s, there was very little awareness, and talking about it was difficult. I experienced firsthand the emotional distress and social anxiety it can cause from being bullied in school to avoiding common changing rooms. It had a lasting psychological impact. That experience gave me a deep empathy for individuals facing cosmetic concerns and made me realise just how important this field can be in improving not only appearances but confidence and quality of life. It's one of the main reasons I chose to specialise in cosmetic surgery.
