While driving down the east coast of the South Island in New Zealand, we discovered a most fascinating art museum of sorts... Steampunk HQ (Head Quarters). We were drawn in by the large older building with a huge locomotive, blimp, and other steampunk artifacts out front. Upon further investigation, we learned that the building was an old grain elevator made of stone built in 1883. Stepping into the lobby, we were hooked and HAD to see more. The $10 NZD per adult admission price was attractive and in hindsight, was about right. The history, as noted from the Steampunk HQ website "Steampunk HQ was founded in 2011 by a group of creative minds (Don Patterson, Jac Grenfell and Brian de Geest), who were passionate about Steampunk, and showcasing it to the public. We are constantly working with talented individuals to collaborate on projects and expand our collection. Steampunk HQ promotes sustainability and recycling; it features an interesting collection of retro-futuristic sci-fi art, movies, sculpture and sound. Oamaru's Victorian precinct is the perfect setting for steampunk, as the architecture is a great backdrop for this alternative version of 19th century England." After exploring the museum (we spent about 2.5 hours, but was very thorough), we walked around the Victorian precinct, which was an attraction in itself. This video doesn't cover that aspect; however, the shops, decor and people made spending a day in Oamaru so much fun.
