STORYLINE:
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer offered a contrasting view of manufacturing in Detroit Thursday, just days after President Donald Trump defended his tariff strategy in the Motor City.

Whitmer is a term-limited Democrat who is in her last year as governor. She said in a speech at the Detroit Auto Show that the administration's tariff strategy has hurt manufacturing and is benefiting Chinese competitors.

Tariffs, Whitmer said, “have taken a terrible toll.”

Trump defended his tariffs earlier this week, when he visited the factory floor of a Ford Motor Company plant in Dearborn, and addressed the Detroit Economic Club.

Whitmer offered a different picture of tariffs, saying that American manufacturing has contracted for months, leading to job loss and production cuts.

“Every industry that relies on a skilled, hands-on workforce is facing shortages,” she said. “This will only get worse without a serious shift in national policy.”
