🎯 What will you learn?

In this course, we will start with some introductory lessons on the type of rigs to recognize the different rigs based on their number of masts, sails orientation, and shape of the sails.

We will define the geometry of sails to clarify all the terminology needed in sail design.

Then we will go through an extensive list of triangular sails that we will encounter on our way and discuss the different ways they can be set up on the boat.

We will talk about sail materials: we will start with woven materials and their characteristics and then move to laminate materials. We will also discuss the properties and characteristics of the fibers making up the sails.

We will also look at what sailcloths are used in real life, their advantages and disadvantages, and the different construction methods.

We will then move into the core of this course, sail aerodynamics, introduce the concepts of velocity triangle wind gradient, and talk about the generation of lift, flow around the sails, and boundary layer.

We will dedicate some lessons to the description of the aerodynamics pressures and forces on the sails, theoretically and by looking at real-life experiments' results.

Still on this topic, we will analyze the different methods for studying sail aerodynamics: wind tunnel testing, numerical simulations, and full-scale testing.

It is time then to move into the sail design itself, looking at the design process and a typical software used by many designers.

We will introduce sail manufacturing and all the phases of the production of a sail, and we will look at the relationship between design and production.

To sum up, what we have seen so far, we will go through sail inventories and the choices to make before designing, look at some examples, and introduce the concepts of sail chart and polar chart.

🎯 Course Instructor:

Dario Motta (https://navalapp.com/members/dario-mo...) is the course instructor. He graduated with full marks in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Genoa, Italy, and obtained a Ph.D. in Sail Aerodynamics at the Yacht Research Unit of the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Dario started his professional career as a sail designer to be soon promoted to the role of Head Sail Designer. Currently, he works as a Head Sail Designer and Production Supervisor for internationally renowned sailmaker companies.

Dario is also a passionate sailor. He started when he was a kid when he participated in competitive sailing in dinghies and bigger boats. Today, he still races and cruises at all levels.

🎯 Course organization:

The course is video-based, and you can follow it at your own pace. Students who complete the course will obtain a Certificate.

Course students will also have access to the course's virtual private classroom, where they can interact with the course instructors and fellow students, and to the course's resources (video lessons. lesson materials, and quizzes).
