2009 Honda S2000 CR | The Ultimate Drivers Education

Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This 2009 Honda S2000 CR isn’t one of them. It’s owned by Honda who kindly let me borrow it for a few days. As a former owner who sold his 2002 Honda S2000 a few years back, my time driving the S2000 CR was both wonderful and wistful. You see, the Honda S2000 played a special role in my development as a driver. Then, after 11 years of ownership, I chose to sell it. I felt conflicted then and still do.

For those who don’t know the S2000 is a rear-drive roadster that started life with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine making 240 horsepower at a stratospheric 9,000 RPM. As a motorcyclist, that screaming redline connected with me in a big way. The original AP1 S2000 was eventually updated and superseded by the AP2, like our 2009 S2000 test car. The AP2 featured various suspension updates to enhance stability plus in an increase from 2.0 liters to 2.2 liters. That update also lowered the redline by roughly 1,000 rpm.

To properly experience the S2000’s handling, acceleration, braking, and overall performance I took it up the winding mountain roads that connect Los Angeles with Big Bear, California. Interestingly, the hard top had been removed from my 2009 S2000 CR test car. No worries. As a top-always-down guy it was great to drive immersed in perpetual wind and sun.

In the end it was great to reacquaint myself with a car that made such an impact on my life trajectory. Without the S2000 I’m not sure I’d be the driver and car reviewer I became. Of course, the big question is whether or not I made a major mistake selling my 2002 S2000. Yeah, probably. But at least I was able to recapture the fun for a bit during this review. Simple.
