At 92 years old, I finally understood something that should have been obvious decades ago:

There is a difference between being loved… and being used.

For most of my life, I didn’t know which column I was in.

I thought love meant being needed.
I thought love meant being the strong one.
The capable wife.
The reliable sister.
The woman who could “handle it.”

I built houses. Managed finances. Covered debts. Organized lives. I was called “the rock.” I was praised for being calm, competent, indispensable.

But indispensable is not the same as cherished.

It took sitting alone in a quiet house, holding a photo from my fiftieth anniversary, to finally see it clearly. The applause. The speeches. The compliments. They weren’t proof of love.

They were proof of usefulness.

When my husband got sick, he clung to me. He said “I love you” more than ever. But I had to ask myself a brutal question:

Did he love me…
Or did he need the manager?

The final realization came when I read his will. Even after he was gone, my life had been structured around keeping everything running smoothly for everyone else. My reliability was built into the system.

That night, I said it out loud:
“I was used.”

And strangely, it didn’t destroy me.

It freed me.

Because once you see the difference, you can never unsee it.

Real love is quiet.
It asks about you.
It sits with you when there’s nothing to gain.
It sees you — not your competence, not your strength, not your utility — just you.

If you feel exhausted but praised…
If you are always the one who “lands on your feet”…
If people rely on you but rarely ask what you need…

Pause.

Look at your own ledger.

Are you being loved?
Or are you being managed?
