[Miami Cancer Institute: Baptist Health South Florida]
[Ramone E. Jimenez, M.D., Chief of Melanoma and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Surgery]
Dr. Ramon Jimenez:
I am Dr. Ramon Jimenez. I am the Chief of Melanoma and Soft Tissue Sarcomas Surgery at Miami Cancer Institute.
[What inspired you to become an oncologist?]
Dr. Ramon Jimenez:
The biggest challenge in medicine and in science during my education was cancer. And for me, it's a battle and that's why I got interested in cancer. I thought it would be my biggest fight, the fight of my life. Let's put it that way. And it's been all of that and more.
[How is technology advancing care?]
Dr. Ramon Jimenez:
The biggest advances have been in minimally invasive surgery, or with robotic surgery. Patients have benefited from all these advances and innovations and introductions of technology. People today are in the hospital less time. I think they have less pain from the surgical procedures, and I think they can recuperate faster, which matters. So, the faster you heal, the faster you can go on to the next part of your treatment.
[How does genetics play a role in patient care?]
Dr. Ramon Jimenez:
Genetics is a big part of putting treatment plans together. At Miami Cancer Institute, we have a Genetics Department that is present during our conferences. A diagnosis of a particular mutation can change the treatment.
[How does quality of life play a role in patient care?]
Dr. Ramon Jimenez:
Quality of life is number one. Sometimes you hear the treatment was worse than the disease, because people want to get treatment and people want to do well, but not at an exorbitant cost. So, quality of life in cancer care, of paramount importance.
