AJ: What's up everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today we're going to check out these Titan Chain snow chains on our 2021 Toyota Tacoma. Now these are going to be a diamond pattern chain that are going to go on your tires and help you get that grip in the snow and the ice, and traction that you won't get without them. Let's check it out.So looking at the tire, this is what we call a diamond pattern. You can see the diamond in the chain, and this is going to be the most surface area that touches the tire. So what I'm talking about is there's the most chain around this tire, so it's going to give you more traction than some of the other designs.
Another one that we have is the ladder pattern, which is just, they got the cables that go across. And those are good for starts and stops, but those aren't necessarily good for when you're driving, having a smooth ride, and getting that grip and breaking that ice. These causing the diamond pattern, have these circles here that help you smash down in that ice and get that grip, and also help you with the starts and the stops, but you're going to have a smooth ride too. So you're not going to feel it like you would with those ladder patterns. And what helps with that traction is these D-shaped links here. You can see that, no matter which way they're laying, they're going to dig in pretty good, because they're nice and thick.
So it gives it a good bite on that ice if there's there or just even the snow. The front has a coating on it, and that's so that it doesn't get as cold as this top part that actually goes around the tire. Because when you're taking these off after you've already been in the snow and ice, you don't want to freeze your hands off with this. We recommend you use gloves, but just in case you don't, these are coated so they won't freeze and get as cold as these up here.Another nice thing that they have going for them is that they are color-coded. So it's easy to see what parts attach where. You saw the chain on the back.
On the front we have this green hook that goes to the yellow links. You can see them. Even if it's dark outside, the yellow's going to stick out and it'll be easy to see. And that goes the same down here for the catch on our self-tensioning system and these loops. They're going to be easy to see.
It runs through to get these chains on there tight. Now that brings me to the self-tensioner itself. I really like it because it's built-in. A lot of the other chains, you have to get a side item that's not attached, then that's just a chance to lose it. I'm bad at keeping things, remember where things go, so I like that this is attached so in emergency, when I need to throw these on, I don't have to worry about finding that other extra missing piece. It's going to be attached to the chain so they'll be right there with you. Also, you get this nice carrying case with the chains, which I think is really important because sometimes they give you those nylon bags or it's just like a sack that they go in and the chains rip through them right away. Well, this has lots of padding. It's kind of like a hard shell on it. So it's not going to get ripped through easily, if at all. You can roll these chains up, put them in here, and they're nice and contained. That way they're not sprawled out in your back seat and there's like one chain over here, one over here. They're nice and contained in this case and they're going to stay in the case and not rip through it.That's all good, but how hard are they to install You need to know that. Before you go and do it in the snow, I suggest trying to practice in your garage or somewhere like that so it's not a stressful situation. This one's pretty easy. We're just going to run the cable around the back, make your connection to top, and drape the chains. Check out how we did it.First thing you want to do is lay out your chains, look for any breaks or twists in the chains. You don't want to go through the trouble of putting these on your tire and then find out it's all messed up. It looks like these are pretty good. Gotten all straightened out. So what I'm going to do is take this cable, run it behind the tire. You see there's a divide in the middle of the chain. That's going to go around the tire itself and I'll connect it around the back.So let's just get to it. Slide it back there. Out the other side. Pull the chain
