There are lots of ways to make money with your writing. But what are the best ways? You don’t want to be just one more writer; you want to take your unique knowledge and build a personal monopoly.

But first, you need to make some money.

If your market is small and differentiated—if you teach fast-growing startups how to grow even faster—you want to get into high-end consulting. You don’t have that many potential customers, so focus on getting a handful of five- and six-figure consulting gigs. That’s all you need!

If your market is more general, though—if you teach people how to write, for example—then your potential customer base is enormous! In this case, you need a business model that benefits from scale.

You’re not going to become a writing coach to 10,000 people; you’re going to sell them a product, instead. This is why online courses are such a powerful way to monetize: they take your knowledge and make it available at scale.

Once you’ve built the foundation of a business using these strategies, it’s time to build a company that can transcend you. Find people who want to work with you, who want to invest in you.
