This song, by the British composer, Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), was composed in 1877. It was composed on the spot at his brother Fred's bedside. Fred was in the last stages of his illness. The manuscript is dated 13 January. Five days later, that is, on the 18th, his brother was dead. The lyric was written by Adelaide Anne Proctor(1825-1864). She published the poem called "A Lost Chord" in 1860 in the THE ENGLISH WOMAN'S JOURNAL.
