Managing Rest and Stress in Islam with Evidences

(1)Rest and Sleep Are Blessings from Allah
Arabic:
وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا
Translation:
"And We made your sleep [a means for] rest."
(Qur'an 78:9)

Explanation: Sleep is essential for rejuvenating the body and mind, and Islam emphasizes its importance for a healthy and balanced life.

(2)The Night as a Time of Rest
Arabic:
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا ۝ وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا
Translation:
"And We made the night as clothing, and We made the day for livelihood."
(Qur'an 78:10-11)
Explanation: The alternation of day and night is a divine sign for the human need to rest at night and work during the day.

(3)Balance Between Worship and Rest
Arabic:
إِنَّ لِجَسَدِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا، وَإِنَّ لِعَيْنِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا
Translation:
"Indeed, your body has a right over you, and your eyes have a right over you."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5199)

(4)*Stress in Islam*
Trials Are Part of Life
Arabic:
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْخَوْفِ وَٱلْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ وَٱلْأَنفُسِ وَٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ
Translation:
"And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient."
(Qur'an 2:155)
Explanation: Stress and challenges are inevitable, but patience is the key to managing them.
Seek Help Through Prayer and Patience
Arabic:
وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى الْخَاشِعِينَ
Translation:
"And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]."

Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ
Translation:
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts, and the oppression of men."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2893)
Explanation: This dua is a powerful means of seeking relief from the burdens of stress and anxiety.

(6)With Hardship Comes Ease
Arabic:
فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ۝ إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
Translation:
"For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease."
(Qur'an 94:6-7)

Explanation: These verses provide hope and reassurance that difficulties are always accompanied by ease.

Practical Steps to Manage Rest and Stress
Establish a Daily Routine
Arabic:
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا
"And We made the day for livelihood." (Qur'an 78:11)

Plan your day to include time for work, worship, family, and rest.

Prioritize the Five Daily Prayers

Arabic:
إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا

Translation:
"Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times."
(Qur'an 4:103)

Reflect on Gratitude

Arabic:
لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ

Translation:
"If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]."
(Qur'an 14:7)

Gratitude shifts focus from stress to blessings, fostering a positive mindset.

Remember Allah (Dhikr)

Arabic:
أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ

"Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."
