Surface Preparation:
Begin by thoroughly cleaning the existing concrete surface to remove any dirt, debris, or contaminants. Use a pressure washer or scrub brush with a degreaser if necessary.
Repair any cracks, chips, or uneven areas in the concrete surface. Fill in these imperfections with a suitable concrete patching compound and smooth them out with a trowel. Allow the patching compound to cure completely before proceeding.
Priming the Surface:
Apply a bonding primer to the cleaned and repaired concrete surface. The primer helps improve adhesion between the existing concrete and the overlay material.
Use a paint roller or sprayer to apply the primer evenly over the entire surface. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding application rates and drying times.
Mixing and Applying the Overlay:
Prepare the stampable cement overlay material according to the manufacturer's instructions. Typically, this involves mixing the overlay powder with water to achieve the desired consistency.
Once mixed, pour the overlay material onto the primed concrete surface. Use a gauge rake or squeegee to spread the material evenly to the desired thickness, typically between 1/4 to 3/8 inches.
Work in small sections to ensure that the overlay remains workable and does not start to set before stamping. Use a concrete finishing broom to create a textured surface that will enhance traction and provide a non-slip finish.
Before the overlay sets completely, use a compass stencil or template to imprint the desired compass design onto the surface. Ensure that the compass design is positioned accurately and uniformly across the entire step area.
These initial steps set the foundation for creating stampable cement overlay compass steps. Stay tuned for the remaining steps to complete your project!
