1. Past events can give you a great idea of the range of outfits to consider. (0:51)
The easiest way to figure out what kind of dress code the event you’re about to attend is by looking at past events on the website to see if most of the speakers/educators are dressed professionally or casually. A good example is a technology event. Most tech events, the speakers are generally wearing t-shirts with jeans with maybe a nice dress shirt, but never anything too professional like what I have on right now. That way, you can better align their accepted way of looking with the things that you enjoy to wear and find a happy medium.
Another great trick I use is I simply just ask the organizer for more details on the dress code and what presenters usually wear, that can give you a great indication as to what will work and what probably won’t for the event. I also recommend preparing your outfit several days in advance before the actual presentation since it gives you ONE less thing to think about and minimizes the amount of distractions you can possibly have in any presentation you walk into will definitely help you along the way. This is how to dress for a presentation.
2. Have someone else pick your clothes. (2:20)
If you’re serious about being an elite level speaker, or being world class in anything really, you want to spend as much time as possible focusing on your craft and delegating everything else whether it’s the video I’m recording right now all the way to food that you eat. Dressing up well is a great example of this too. I still have no idea how to pick out my clothes, so I just ask the person who knows more than I do to spend an hour or 2 shopping with me. This can save you so much headache and stress because you can simply reuse the outfits that your friend selects for you and just buy them lunch as a thank you for their time. Simple as that.
Everything that you see here from the clothes that I’m wearing to the setting is not by my design, it’s by someone else who helps me create this experience for you, my viewer, so that I can spend the 99% of my life just focused on perfecting my thought leadership. So, when in doubt, ask someone that dresses well to pick out your clothes and be grateful they did. This is how to dress for a presentation.
3. As you get more comfortable with style, you can leverage your outfit to communicate your brand. (3:46)
Seth Godin, one of the best speakers I’ve ever seen, pretty much embodies this tip. Despite how high end his suits and outfits are, he always likes to throw in a lot of purple and funky ties. Why? Because it exemplifies who he is as a person. Professional, but unique, and special and different. This fits in perfectly with his message to be a lynchpin, to be different, and to be world class at the thing that you do which in his case is marketing. When choosing whether or not to go with a suit or something much more casual for my audience, I intentionally chose to put a suit on. Why? For a bunch of reasons, so that older people would take me more seriously despite how young I was, but more importantly because I wanted to. So many YouTubers are so casual with their outfits and there’s nothing wrong with that, but it helps me be a little more unique filming in this beautiful setting that I’m grateful for so that I can create videos that will last for a lifetime, so my ask of you here, is not just to follow the rules of style, but break them in the way you want to so long as it serves the ideas you want to share with the world. This is how to dress for a presentation.
Style gives us an opportunity to share something about ourselves to the world so use it wisely to fully share what you have to say to the people who are looking forward to hearing from you.
