Photographs were taken by Nick Hedges

Nick Hedges was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire in 1943. From his 1965 to 1968 he studied photography at the Birmingham College of Art where he participated in the Birmingham Housing Exhibition on Poor Housing in Birmingham as his graduation project for his Trust.

After graduating from college, Shelter commissioned his Hedges to document oppressive and deplorable living conditions in substandard housing across Britain. Having visited cities such as London, Glasgow, Manchester, Salford, Bradford, Liverpool and Newcastle, Hedges captured stunning scenes of families negotiating life in the slums.

Hedges believed that photographers should work on projects that help reform and improve society, and hoped through his photography to help raise awareness of the extent of inappropriate living conditions.
