Euclid police have confirmed to 3News that an officer died in the line of duty Saturday night.

Officers were responding to a disturbance in the 300 block of East 211th Street at approximately 9:56 p.m. While police investigated the call, a gunman shot the officer, in what was described as an "ambush," before leaving the scene.

The officer was taken to University Hospitals for treatment but he didn’t survive.

Residents who live on the street told 3News they heard "about 12 gunshots" during the incident.

Euclid police say multiple law enforcement agencies are currently assisting them in locating the person believed to be responsible for the officer’s death.

The suspected shooter has been identified as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn. Police say he is “considered armed and extremely dangerous.” He may be driving a white 2017 Volkswagen Passat with a temporary license plate in the rear window. An Ohio Blue Alert from the state attorney general's office listed the plane number as R947155.

Vaughn stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs about 215 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
