Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video show an example of a femoral shaft fracture and fixation with IM nail fixation.

The thigh bone is called the femur. Treatment of a femoral shaft fracture is usually done with surgery. The fracture is usually stabilized with an intramedullary rod and anchored with screws to the bone.
Fixation of the Fracture Femur Shaft
1. Physician will use the fracture table to help position the fracture before surgery
2. C-arm x-ray image intensifier will allow the physician to see the fracture and fixation in real time
3. A small incision will be made at the hip region
4. Next, an awl is inserted to open the proximal segment
5. Guide wire is inserted and proper reaming is done
6. Then, a rod of adequate size and length is inserted
7. Guide wire is removed and the rod is anchored with screws to the bone
