This song commemorates the Canadians who formed the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion of volunteers and joined the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. The lyrics tell the (fictional) story of "Jack", as seen through the eyes of his younger brother who awaits his return while the spectre of all-out war across Europe looms on the horizon.
