The “color coding” of implants and medical instruments made from titanium and titanium alloys is extremely useful to surgeons, including in the field of prosthetics, both before and during surgery.

Medical technology products are color-coded typically using the TioCol™ color anodizing process. Color-anodized titanium implants boast excellent biocompatibility regardless the color and the TioCol™ treatment also reduces the release of alloy elements from the titanium alloy. Depending on the requirements, the implants are first pre-treated (mechanical pre-treatment, cleaning, pickling). The color-specific thickness of the titanium oxide layer is achieved electrochemically during the TioCol™ anodizing process by applying direct voltage.

With KKS TioCol™ color anodizing systems, oxide layer thicknesses between 10 and 300 nanometers can be achieved reproducibly through exact implementation of the process parameters. Oxide layers in this thickness range cause an interference effect that makes the surfaces appear in a wide spectrum of colors (shown in the video). Through precisely adjustable process control, KKS TioCol™ color anodizing systems guarantee reproducible and homogeneous coloring.
