The Brown-headed Parrot is one of southern Africa’s most rewarding parrot species to keep and breed in aviculture. Known for their calm temperament, intelligence, and relatively quiet nature, Brown-headed Parrots are popular among both experienced breeders and dedicated bird keepers.
In this in-depth aviculture guide, we cover everything you need to know about keeping and breeding Brown-headed Parrots responsibly, based on practical husbandry experience and species-specific needs.

Brown-headed Parrots originate from south-eastern Africa, including parts of South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini. In the wild, they inhabit forest savannas and dry woodlands, often nesting in tree cavities. Despite being popular in aviculture, they are protected under CITES Appendix II, making ethical breeding and responsible ownership essential.
🏡 Housing & Enrichment
Brown-headed Parrots are energetic birds that require adequate space to fly, climb, and chew. A spacious aviary or large cage with multiple perches, natural branches, and chewable toys is essential for both physical and mental health. Access to natural sunlight or full-spectrum lighting is especially important to prevent calcium deficiency.
🥗 Diet & Nutrition
A balanced diet for Brown-headed Parrots should include:
• High-quality seed or nut mixes
• Fresh fruits and vegetables
• Leafy greens and seasonal foods
• Clean drinking and bathing water
Calcium deficiency is one of the most common health issues in captive birds and can lead to feather picking and weakness if not addressed.
🪺 Breeding Brown-headed Parrots
Brown-headed Parrots breed well in captivity when given privacy and suitable nesting conditions. Breeding usually occurs between April and October, though some pairs may breed outside this period.
• Typical clutch size: 2–4 eggs
• Incubation period: 22–26 days
• Fledging age: 7–9 weeks
• Weaning: Around 12 weeks
Hand-rearing from the egg stage is extremely challenging, and chicks are best left with their parents for at least the first 1–2 weeks.
