ITALIAN & ENGLISH LYRICS
=======================
La mamma morta ...
m'hanno alla porta della stanza mia.
Moriva e mi salvava !
poi a notte alta io con Bersi errava,
quando ad un tratto ...
un livido bagliore guizza ...
e rischiara innanzi a' passi miei ...
La cupa via ! Guarda !
Bruciava il loco di mia culla !

Così fui sola !
E intorno il nulla !
Fame e miseria !
Il bisogno il periglio !
Così caddi malata.
e Bersi, buona e pura ...
di sua bellezza,
ha fatto un mercato ...
un contratto per me !
Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole !
Fu in quel dolore ...
che a me venne l'amor !

Un Voce piena d'armonia e dice :

" Vivi ancora ! Io son la vita ! "
" Ne' miei occhi è il tuo Cielo ! "
" Tu non sei sola ! "
" Le lacrime tue io le raccolgo ! "
" Io sto sul tuo cammino e ti sorreggo ! "
" Sorridi e spera ! Io son l'amore ! "
" Tutto intorno è sangue e fango ? "
" Io son divino ! Io son l'oblio ! "
" Io sono il Dio che sovra il mondo scendo
da l'empireo fa della Terra un Ciel ! "
" Io son l'amore ...
io son l'amor ...
l'amor ! "

E l'angelo si accosta ...
bacia e vi bacia la morte !
Corpo di moribonda ...
è il corpo mio ...
Prendilo dunque ...
io sono già morta !

ENGLISH LYRICS
==============
They killed my mother ...
at the door of my bedroom ...
She died while saving me !
Later, in the dead of the night ...
I wandered along with Bersi ...
When suddenly ...
a bright glow was flickering ...
and lights were ahead of me ...
on this dark path !
And as I looked ...
I saw my childhood home...
It was on fire !
And now I am all alone !
Surrounded by nothingness !
Hunger and misery !
Deprivation and danger !
and then I fell very ill ...
And Bersi, so good and pure ...
had made a market deal exchange ...
for her own beauty ...
in order to save me ...

I bring misfortune ...
to all who care for me !
It was then ... in my grief ...
that Love had come to me ...
A voice full of harmony said :

" Keep on living ..."
" I am life itself ! "
" Your Heaven is in my eyes ! "
" You are not alone ! "
" I will collect all of your tears ... "
" I will walk along with you ... "
" and I will support you ! "
" Smile and have Hope ! ..."
" I am Love ! "
" Are you surrounded ...
by blood and mud ? "
" I am Divine ! " ...
" I am Oblivion ! "
" I am the God ...
who saves the World ! "
" I have descended ...
from Heaven above ...
and I have created ...
this Earth and Heaven ! Ah ! "
" I am Love ! Love ! Love ! "

And then an Angel ...
approaches me with a kiss.
My body is a dying body ...
And this Angel of Death ...
then kisses death.
Just take my body !
I am already dead anyhow !

ARIA SYNOPSIS
=====================
Anna Netrebko is singing this profoundly powerful aria for the Soprano's character role of : " Maddalena di Coigny " from Andrea Chénier's Opera : " Maddalena di Coigny. "

Maddalena is a daughter from a wealthy noble family. She is telling " Gérard, " one of the rivals for her love, how her mother had been died when she had been killed while she was protecting Maddalena during the turmoils of the French Revolution. After Maddalena had literally lost everything, and was left hungry starving in depravation, despair, and in a state of overwhelming misery, misfortune, and loss, Maddalena had then almost given up on her own life and had consequently fallen terribly ill.

Maddalena's faithful servant " Bersi " " traded her own beauty ", in other words Bersi had sold her own beauty in a market deal prostitution contract of Bersi's own body in order to save Maddalena's life. This desperation is implied in the line :

" Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole ! "
(I bring misfortune to those who love me well !)

This aria line is placed at the center of the aria. From this point on, Maddalena recalls hearing the " Voice of Love, " which promises companionship and forgetfulness ( Oblivion ) of all Maddalena's traumatic horrors which she had experienced, endured, and was exposed to during the chaos of the French Revolution.
