Few days ago, I was talking to one of the parents about ways in which math can be learnt through games. Today, my daughter (4 years old) was getting super excited about winning some game all the time against her granny. So, I wondered what this game was. I decided to sit through one of these games that was made-up by granny and grand daughter duo.

They made up a simple game using the dice from Yahtzee. The rules are pretty simple :
1. You need to roll 25 '6's first to win.
2. You get another turn if you roll a 6
3. You can swap your scores with opponent any time if both opponents agree to it. ( No wonder she was winning the game all the time)

Although it was a made up game, it is helping her with several things in terms of math:
1. She can recognize 6 on a dice instantly. ( Dice subitizing is one of the objectives)
2. She is practicing on keeping both player's scores in her memory each time. Needs a great deal of concentration for a four year old. In the process, she is also understanding the concept of cardinality ( one of the objectives for Pre-K/k math)
3. She counts forward from the current score whenever she gets a 6 ( counting ahead from a given number is also an objective )
4. Mental addition e.g : 12+3 = 15
5. More/less -- she is figuring out who is ahead in the game

Lastly, a gentle guidance when she makes a mistake.
Nothing beats a quality time spent by parents/grandparents!!
