IMPHAL — Internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Sajiwa and Swombung relief camps, including families from Ekou, Yengkhuman, Dolaithabi and Sadu Yengkhuman, held a protest march today from Pukhao Terapur, opposing the state’s decision to hold the Sangai Festival while thousands remain displaced.

The march escalated into a confrontation when security forces attempted to stop the protesters near the Dolaithabi Dam. Officers placed barbed wire barricades to block the procession, leading to a scuffle in which several IDPs fell and suffered minor injuries.

Protesters said they marched to demand a safe return to their homes, arguing that conditions in the relief camps had become unbearable. “We want to go back. Living in the camps with no certainty is impossible,” one protester said.

Residents in Ekou, Yengkhuman, Dolaithabi and Sadu Yengkhuman also appealed that IDPs taking shelter in relief camp will not return back from the protest site.

Tension rose when IDPs alleged that a BSF vehicle nearly hit a protester during the standoff. Security personnel later fired tear gas shells and a few blank rounds to disperse the crowd as the situation became more volatile.

Arounf four IDPs reportedly injured. The area remained tense.
