The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra, India. It was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth in 1631. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and was completed in 1653, with a workforce of over 20,000 artisans and craftsmen.

The Taj Mahal is considered one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture, a blend of Indian, Persian, and Islamic styles. It is made entirely of white marble and features intricate carvings and inlays of semi-precious stones, such as jade, crystal, and turquoise. The complex also includes a mosque and a guesthouse, both constructed of red sandstone.

The central dome of the Taj Mahal is surrounded by four smaller domes and stands at a height of 73 meters (240 feet). The interior of the mausoleum is adorned with intricate calligraphy and floral motifs, while the exterior features a series of arched entrances, elegant minarets, and reflective pools.

Legend has it that Shah Jahan had originally planned to build a black marble replica of the Taj Mahal across the river as his own mausoleum, but was deposed by his own son Aurangzeb and imprisoned in Agra Fort. He spent the rest of his days gazing out at the Taj Mahal from his prison window until his death in 1666.

Today, the Taj Mahal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts millions of visitors each year. It is considered one of the most iconic landmarks in the world and a symbol of enduring love.
