How to make the pea pod crochet kit from KMART (beginner tutorial)

Have you bought the anko pea pod DIY mini crochet kit from kmart or target? Are you totally confused by the instructions? If so - you're not alone, and you are not the problem.

I recently reviewed this kit (check out that video if you're interested - link below) and discovered that the instructions are very unfriendly for beginners. So I've created this tutorial to help any one out who bought this kit and is struggling to pull the pea pod together.

This is a beginner tutorial - but I assume you know how to do a slip knot, a starting chain and a single crochet - but if you're an absolute beginner, see below for some links to tutorials on those three elements. Otherwise I'll explain everything you need to be able to make this kit - including how to do increases, invisible decreases, a magic circle, how to embroider the face, and even how to give your peas rosy little cheeks.
