Welcome to Smart Dental Academy, the hub for Conservative Dentistry and Operative Dentistry learning. In this lecture, we explore the complete terminology of cavity preparation, focusing on the definitions, types, and clinical importance of all cavity walls, line angles, point angles, and margins. This knowledge is fundamental for BDS, BS Dental Technology, and Diploma dental students.
🦷 Cavity Walls in Tooth Preparation
🔹 External Walls
Cavity walls that extend to the external tooth surface. These are named after the tooth surface they face:
Facial (Buccal) Wall – faces the cheek or lips
Lingual Wall – faces the tongue or palate
Mesial Wall – faces the midline of the dental arch
Distal Wall – faces away from the midline
Gingival Wall/Floor – in Class II & V preparations, located near the gingiva
🔹 Internal Walls
Cavity walls that do not extend to the external surface.
Pulpal Wall (Pulpal Floor) – horizontal wall perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth, adjacent to the pulp chamber (seen in occlusal preparations like Class I).
Axial Wall – vertical internal wall parallel to the long axis of the tooth, adjacent to the pulp (common in Class II, III, and V cavities).
🦷 Line Angles of Cavity Preparation
A line angle is formed by the junction of two cavity walls. They are named by combining the names of the two walls.
🔹 Common Line Angles in Posterior Teeth (Class I & II Preparations):
Mesiobuccal Line Angle
Mesiolingual Line Angle
Distobuccal Line Angle
Distolingual Line Angle
Bucco-occlusal Line Angle
Linguo-occlusal Line Angle
Mesiopulpal Line Angle
Distopulpal Line Angle
🔹 Common Line Angles in Anterior Teeth (Class III & V Preparations):
Mesiolabial Line Angle
Distolabial Line Angle
Mesiolingual Line Angle
Distolingual Line Angle
Linguogingival Line Angle
Labio-gingival Line Angle
Mesiogingival Line Angle
Distogingival Line Angle
🦷 Point Angles of Cavity Preparation
A point angle is formed by the junction of three cavity walls. These are also named by combining the three walls.
🔹 Common Point Angles in Posterior Teeth (Class I & II):
Mesiobucco-occlusal Point Angle
Distobucco-occlusal Point Angle
Mesiolinguo-occlusal Point Angle
Distolinguo-occlusal Point Angle
Mesiobucco-pulpal Point Angle
Distobucco-pulpal Point Angle
Mesiolinguo-pulpal Point Angle
Distolinguo-pulpal Point Angle
🔹 Common Point Angles in Anterior Teeth (Class III & V):
Mesiolabio-gingival Point Angle
Distolabio-gingival Point Angle
Mesiolinguo-gingival Point Angle
Distolinguo-gingival Point Angle
🦷 Cavosurface Margin
The junction between a cavity wall and the external surface of the tooth. Proper cavosurface angle design ensures strength, retention, and resistance of the restoration.
🦷 Classifications of Cavities (GV Black)
Class I Cavity – pits and fissures of molars, premolars, and lingual pits of anterior teeth
Class II Cavity – proximal surfaces of posterior teeth
Class III Cavity – proximal surfaces of anterior teeth (not involving the incisal edge)
Class IV Cavity – proximal surfaces of anterior teeth involving the incisal angle
Class V Cavity – gingival third of facial or lingual surfaces
Class VI Cavity – incisal edges of anterior teeth and cusp tips of posterior teeth
📚 Why This Matters for Dental Students
A clear understanding of cavity walls, line angles, point angles, and margins helps in:
Designing accurate Class I, II, III, IV, and V cavity preparations
Ensuring retention, resistance, and longevity of restorations
Improving clinical skills and exam performance
