KARUNA (COMPASSION)
"Karuna" is an acclaimed Malayalam poem by the Kerala poet laureate Kumaranashan in 1923.
In Uttharamadhurapuri of North Madura, Vasavadatta, a woman renowned for her beauty and known as Vaara Sundari, resided. Despite having numerous suitors, none possessed the qualities she sought. Her heart, however, was captivated by Upagupta, a Buddhist saint.
The tale of Kumaranashan's "Karuna" unfolds as their lives intertwine, marked by conflicts and impulsive actions, all unfolding against the backdrop of their respective backgrounds.
Living in blissful ignorance of her beauty and wealth, Vasavadatta enjoyed a life of luxury. However, when she entered a union with a wealthier Chettiar, she took a drastic step by eliminating the leader of her clan who had been by her side until then. As a result of this crime, the King sentenced her to the gruesome punishment of mutilating her body parts, compelling her to endure excruciating agony near the cemetery or forest.
At this critical juncture, Upagupta, the Buddhist monk who had rejected her advances multiple times before, arrived. He offered counsel, urging her to seek refuge and attain nirvana despite the dire circumstances.
In stark contrast to Vasavadatta's miserliness, Upagupta's aversion to her is transformed into an expression of compassion. He offered a heartfelt prayer for Vasavadatta by performing the funeral rites after her death.
We wish for the reincarnation of individuals like Upagupta, who selflessly aid others and the less fortunate, prioritizing their well-being over personal luxury and interests. The aspiration is for such benevolent souls to continue working for the betterment of society and the world at large, recognizing it as an essential element for the overall goodness of the world.
