Escorting Individuals
Safety is the number one concern when escorting a prisoner. So we must first look at the basic principles that improve our chances of survival in every situation.
1. Avoidance: also known as getting off line, off the tracks, moving to the outside and many other terminologies have been used to describe this step. The basic point is that if you stand in the path of energy you will absorb it.
2. Stun: also known as a distraction, nerve strike, dividing the attention, off balancing and many other terminologies have been used to describe this step. The basic point is that you must steal the sequence of events by placing the aggressor into a defensive mind set.
3. Tactic: also known as technique, follow up, finishing move, controlling sequence and many other terminologies have been used to describe this step. The basic point is that you must follow through with the control of the individual or your purpose is not needed.
4. Disengage: also known as a tactical retreat, forming the G.A.P. ( generated awareness preparation zone) and many other terminologies have been used to describe this step. The basic understanding is that if you put all your efforts into a failed technique it will still fail.
Cooperation vs Resistance
Cooperative individuals will usually use good judgment or reasoning and chose the path of least resistance, by not compounding their current problems with new criminal charges.
However, 10 out of 10 people do not want their freedom of movement jeopardized, but 2 out of 10 will fight you over it. These individuals chose to use emotions to drive their actions instead of logic.
These individuals will usually show their intentions through predictable body language. Continuously looking threw you or around you for a place to run, clinching their fist, shacking their heads in disbelief, telling you they are not going back to jail, etc. All of these signs are warnings that the individual is not going easy.
To verify your suspicions place your hand on their elbow, and check for physical resistance. If they pull away, you have three choices, wait for back up by distracting them with cleverness, let them leave and deal with them later if applicable or force the arrest. However you deal with it remember the rules of protection; avoidance, stun, control, and disengage
Using angles to escort the individual will always benefit you if they decide to go from logical to emotional during the process. Remember that every martial arts teaches the basic four directions of defense; forward, rear, and side to side. So 90 degrees is not an acceptable angle to use during escorting procedures. You want to use 45 degree angles during transportation of the individuals to avoid sudden attacks. This method will self warn as the individual tries to adjust to a 90 degree angle to start their attack.
