Episode 15: Discipline, Reporting, and the Referee’s Responsibility Beyond the Game
This episode addresses discipline, reporting requirements, and an official’s responsibilities after the game.
Penalties assessed during the game are distinct from discipline imposed after the game. Officials do not assign suspensions but initiate the disciplinary process through proper reporting.
Rule 405 requires mandatory reporting for all game misconduct penalties.
Rule 406 requires mandatory reporting for all match penalties. A match penalty results in immediate removal and automatic disciplinary review.
Reports must be factual, timely, and limited to what occurred. Officials must avoid speculation, opinion, or emotional language.
Reports should include the date, location, level of play, individuals involved, rule numbers violated, penalties assessed, and a concise description of the incident.
Professional conduct extends beyond the final buzzer. Officials must avoid post-game confrontation and communicate through official reporting channels only.
