Spinalonga is a small island at the coast of Crete in Greece. The island of Spinalonga was important throughout its history. Firstly build by the Greeks and Byzantines it later became a Venetian Fortress, eventually a Ottoman prison and in modern times a refuge for Cretans with leprosy.
