m62b46tu (and other m62tu engines)
how to do replace the timing chain tensioner:
2000-2006 e53 x5 4.4 or 4.6
e38, e39, e36, anything with an m62 engine

tools needed
flathead screwdriver or 6mm socket
19mm socket
ratchet (preferably a swivel ratchet)
swivel socket (or 2 if you dont have a swivel ratchet)

take off the intake piping
remove secondary air pump hose
turn intake tubes out the way
reach under passengers side to feel chain tensioner with your fingers
assemble the proper 19mm/ratchet/swivel combo
remove timing chain tensioner
make sure all parts come out
insert new timing chain tensioner
start the threading with your fingers
torque to spec
reassemble everything for the intake/maf
prime your engine 1-3 times
~ turn on to ignition but not engine start
turn vehicle on, may click/rattle for a few seconds
~ tensioner getting oil to apply pressure to chain guides
Complete!

top up oil if needed.
not a hard job, just very annoying to do.

~~ was told its recommended to do this every 15k miles or so. $30-40 part and some time is far cheaper than a $8-1200 timing chain replacement.
