In 1901, just months after Federation, the Australian National Flag was raised for the very first time. Chosen from a public competition, it became the symbol of a young nation under the Southern Cross.

In 2026, we mark the 125th anniversary of that historic moment — a milestone that honours not only the story of Federation, but also recognises more than 40,000 years of continuous First Nations culture, the world’s oldest living culture. The formation of the new nation, the Commonwealth of Australia would in time, lead to the recognition and appreciation of Australia’s Indigenous Peoples” (includes the TSI People).

This anniversary is also an opportunity to search the length and breadth of Australia for historic flags preserved in museums, archives, and community collections — from the first 1901 design, to Boer War banners, Sydney Harbour Bridge flags, wartime ensigns, and locally sewn community flags.

Each flag tells a story. Together, they carry the journey of Australia — past, present, and future — under the Southern Cross.
