STORYLINE

Demonstrators gathered near the Capitol building in Washington DC on Saturday to rally for peace and protest the mounting US pressure for military action against Iraq.

The rally, led by umbrella group "International ANSWER", was expected to be joined by over 100-thousand demonstrators.

That would rival the showing for the group's previous rally on the Mall back in October, which was billed as the biggest peace demonstration in Washington DC since the Vietnam war.

Police said they were expecting a peaceful demonstration and march, but had put more than 500 officers on stand by to monitor events.

The other side of the political spectrum was represented by a small group of military veterans and their families who gathered near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to show support for the US military.
