It became the only time in the entire war that Americans and Germans joined forces in battle. Wehrmacht Major Josef Gangl was killed defending the French prisoners he had once guarded, while Captain Jack Lee and his men held the castle until reinforcements arrived.

The Battle of Castle Itter remains one of the strangest and most powerful moments in military history. It was a fight where enemies became allies, and where courage and humanity mattered more than the flags they once served.
