I started to become interested in skating when I was around 8 years old over in Richmond, VA. A kid I befriended from the neighborhood I was living in would let me use his yellow G&S penny board to bomb a hill in that same neighborhood. We would spend hours just bombing that hill and sometimes race each other to the bottom. I ended up moving away later that Fall and just before I left, my friend gave me that Yellow G&S penny board to take with me. I didn’t actually get to pick up skateboarding until I was 15 years old, but the seed had been planted. Once I did finally get to pick up skateboarding more aggressively, it took a couple years before I started to get really good at it. By the time I was 24 years old, I had been skateboarding for 9 years. At that time, I was married, a father of two and working full-time in a factory to support my family. I looked at my skateboard and decided to put childish things behind me. What a mistake that turned out to be. Now I am 45 years old and have been back on my board for about 2 years. I never showed my kids what I was capable of doing. My son who is in the video unboxing the decks is my 4th and youngest. Despite being really weak on a board, I showed him a few basic tricks and he was blown away. Since then, he has started to skate with me and is progressing really well. I’m definitely not letting go this time. That is why I have a collection of skateboarding stuff. I never fully got it out of my system. So if I can give anyone at least one advice, don’t let go of the things you are passionate about. Find a way to adapt to changes in your life, but also, hang on to those amazing things that you love.
