LIVERPOOL CITY CENTRE | A tour of Liverpool One, Lime Street and Chinatown
Come with me to the birthplace of The Beatles and the home of The Queen of Scotty Road, Liverpool and Everton football clubs and more as we explore the city centre from Liverpool One Shopping Centre to Chinatown.

We'll head from Liverpool One to Lime Street Station and St John's Shopping Centre and along to Chinatown in this look at the city centre.

Liverpool's city centre is anchored by its vibrant retail and leisure districts, prominently featuring Liverpool ONE and St John's Shopping Centre. Liverpool ONE is a massive, contemporary open-air shopping and leisure complex that was a major catalyst for the city's regeneration when it opened in 2008. It features over 170 stores, ranging from high-street brands to luxury boutiques, along with restaurants, a cinema, and the five-acre Chavasse Park. Conversely, St John's Shopping Centre is one of the largest covered shopping centres in the city, established in 1969. Situated more centrally to the historic retail core and close to the main transport links, St John's provides a mix of high-street names and independent shops, serving as a vital and easily accessible retail fixture for the local population and visitors.

A critical component of the city centre's infrastructure is Liverpool Lime Street Station, the principal railway terminus and a historical landmark. Opening in 1836, it is the oldest operational grand terminus mainline station in the world and serves as Liverpool's primary connection point to the rest of the UK. The station links Liverpool to the West Coast Main Line with direct services to London Euston and also provides regional connections across Northern England. It is architecturally notable, fronted by the grand, French Château-style North Western Hotel building (now student accommodation). It includes both the high-level mainline platforms and the low-level underground Merseyrail Wirral Line station, cementing its role as the city's central transport hub and a common point of arrival for tourists.

Located in the southern part of the city centre, Liverpool's Chinatown is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe, with origins dating back to the late 1860s when Chinese sailors settled following the creation of strong trade links with Shanghai and Hong Kong. Today, the district is instantly recognisable by the Chinese Ceremonial Archway on Nelson Street, which is the largest of its kind outside of mainland China. This ornate, 44-foot-tall arch was gifted by Shanghai in 2000 and symbolises the long-standing ties between the cities. Chinatown remains a cultural hub, known for its Chinese restaurants, supermarkets, and community associations, and is a major site for cultural events such as the annual Chinese New Year celebrations.
