How did the mighty Roman Empire turn Christian? In 312 AD, before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, Emperor Constantine saw a vision of a cross in the sky with the words: “In this sign, you shall conquer.” He ordered his soldiers to paint the Chi-Rho, the symbol of Christ, on their shields. Marching into battle under a Christian banner for the first time in centuries, Constantine defeated his rival, secured the empire, and soon after legalized Christianity. The same empire that once crucified Christ now declared Him the divine protector of Rome.
