Camp Carson, Colorado, July 1943. German POW Kurt watched an American guard casually eating ice cream and thought he was hallucinating. Ice cream? In a prison camp? Then they introduced him to Coca-Cola—ice cold, fizzy, impossibly sweet. He drank three bottles his first day. "In Germany we have nothing like this. Is this special?" he asked. Sergeant Torres laughed: "Nah, it's everywhere. Normal." Kurt realized: a country that gives prisoners ice cream and Coke isn't weak—it's so strong it can afford enemy comfort. When he returned to destroyed Germany in 1946, he brought two Coke bottles home. His starving mother drank one and understood.
