Both the BLC and BLCM wagons are used to transport 20 and 40 ft. intermodal containers in single or double stack configurations. The BLC has a carrying capacity of ~61 tons whereas the BLCM can carry up to ~68 tons of cargo weight including the tare weight of the containers. There are 45 wagons in one rake, with each wagon being able to carry two TEUs in single stack or four TEUs in double stack configuration.

Flat wagons can be inducted under Container Train Operator (CTO) license scheme of Indian Railways.
Flat wagons under CTO license scheme are used to carry intermodal containers to cater to EXIM and domestic trade.
